As I write this, it’s Monday afternoon August 7th and it’s 1 a.m. the next day in Cambodia. In seven hours, the byTavi Sales and Marketing Team and I will Skype with our Cambodian co-workers to select fabric for the September order.
While it’s dusk here and dawn there, we will be ready for the call with our order in hand after our Cambodian co-workers have arrived at the market by tuk-tuk. Our byTavi Administrator Sinuon has carefully calculated how much fabric we need to fulfill the order.
The market is so hot. Tomorrow it will be 95 degrees in Cambodia. Mach and Nary, byTavi’s Production Supervisors, will carefully sift through the fabric at each vendor booth, sending photos to us as we strategically choose on-trend prints and colors for the season ahead.
When we end the call, typically past midnight U.S. time, the Cambodian staff is still in the market waiting for the bolts of fabric to be cut and prepared for delivery.
The fabric will arrive at the byTavi workshop and our management team will begin preparing the September order while our seamstresses complete the previous month’s order. Meanwhile, we will assign each new fabric to a handbag or clothing style. 705 handbags and 768 pieces of clothing will be cut to their specified pattern and then handed off to a seamstress to bring the design to life.
EACH BAG AND EACH PIECE OF CLOTHING GOES THROUGH A THREE-WEEK PRODUCTION PROCESS. A BYTAVI SEAMSTRESS HAS HER HANDS IN LINING THE BAG, QUILTING THE FABRIC, ATTACHING THE HARDWARE AND SEWING THE ZIPPERS.
To complete the product she proudly places the byTavi label and signs her name.
WE SAY THIS FIRST TO ACKNOWLEDGE HOW HONORED WE ARE TO HAVE THESE HARD-WORKING WOMEN SEATED BEHIND OUR SEWING STATIONS.
From their hands to yours, an item is produced with care and the woman behind it is full of pride, knowing you chose the piece.
We also say this to share how much heart and energy goes into each product. We want to pay our seamstresses fairly for their work and continue to provide a safe working environment.
We find ourselves in a season of growth. byTavi sales are increasing and our seamstresses are advancing in the types of products they can produce. As the byTavi product line expands, costs are increasing.
WE WANT TO BE A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT AND AS A RESULT OF THAT, WE MUST INCREASE OUR RETAIL PRICES.
We value you as a customer and supporter of byTavi so we choose to be transparent as this increase is uncomfortable for us, too.
If we maintained our current retail pricing, byTavi would be unsustainable. We believe and trust God has plans to expand byTavi and so we are choosing to grow and change.
It is our hope that you will see how proud we are of our seamstresses, that you will know how much love goes into your purse or article of clothing and that you will continue to invest in the byTavi Project.
We are entrusted with these hand crafted products and will continue to market them with consideration and care, desiring to represent our seamstresses well, because they are worth it.
Early October we will receive the September order. We will open all 20 plus boxes like it is Christmas morning, excited to see the prints we chose during our evening market call. We will photograph each piece for byTavi.com, share new arrivals with our wholesalers, and our warehouse volunteers will be busy tagging the product for our local boutique shoppers.
Among the busyness, we pray for our seamstresses, we pray for sales, and we thank God for you, our customers.
BECAUSE LIVES ARE BEING CHANGED THROUGH YOUR PURCHASE.
